Covers 285 individuals, from the late 15th Century to the present day, and references many more. Nicely hardbound in half morocco leather and red cloth, with four raised bands and gold lettering on the spine. Foxing on plates is light to moderate and is typical for these surveys due to the acidic paper used. Some titles include the Latin names of species neatly penciled in at the bottom of plates. Containing a total of 105pp. and 86 plates, this is a very good collection of many of the herpetology portions of the Railroad and Boundary surveys. The Boundary Survey is especially scarce, but a complete collection of either is very difficult to obtain. This copy from the Adrian Crane Library, see the Crane catalouge for more information. [000093] Burden, W. D.. Dragon Lizards of Komodo, An Expedition to the Lost World of the Dutch East Indies.. G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, New York, 1927. Signed by Author. 221pp. with nine chapters and 51 b&w photographs of the places, animals, and people encountered during the trip. A map of the travels during this expedition is on reverse of both the front and back covers and adjoining pages. Burden was a wealthy adventurer and hunter and approached Henry Fairfield Osborne, then President of the American Museum of Natural History with the idea of a museum expedition to Komodo to not only bring back specimens for the museum but to capture live dragons for the Bronx Zoo. Osborne approved the mission and Burden hired E. R. Dunn as the official herpetologist. One photo shows a young Dunn holding a Timor python. The expedition returned with 12 dragon skins, two of which were used for one of the AMNH's dioramas, and two living lizards for the zoo. This is an extremely interesting book, the story of which may have resulted in the movie "King Kong." Very good condition with dark red cloth with gold lettering on spine (faded) and on front cover. Apparently signed by the author as a gift with the inscription "With much love and Merry Christmas, from, Douglas and Babs." These appear to be uncut copies of these volumes, pages measuring approximately 12x10 inches. New tissue guards inserted with plates during binding. These are the first two volumes of Holbrook's monumental, initial printing of the first Documentation of the reptiles and amphibians inhabiting the United States. Exceedingly Rare, any volume of this four volume set, dated 1836-1840, is nearly impossible to find.The great Philadelphia lithographer, Peter S. Duval, executed the plates, and several of the Plates are what Duval dubbed "lithotints," plates with several tones of printed color which \ Were then finished by hand. The plates are beautifully drawn and colored. Overall, this is A very nice set of the first two volumes of the first printing of this work. This is a classic summary of what was known of snake natural history in the mid-18th century. The book is composed of three parts, the first two covering biology and behavior. The final part consists of six essays on the role of serpents in the Bible, and snake worship. Owen believed that snakes were "good" animals, should not be the object of fear and hatred, and were of use to Mankind. Title page with minor repair, light water-stain on first 24 pages. This copy came from the Adrian Crane collection, see catalogue for more details. Overall a good copy of this important and interesting volume.
